Lady Lara Croft is the only child of Lord Henshingly and Lady Andrea Croft. She was set for an ordinary, wealthy, life but a few days before her marriage to her fiancé Roger the plane carrying Roger, her parents, and herself crashed. Lara was the only survivor and having to learn to cope on her own in the wilderness changed her completely and she began her career as a Tomb Raider (#1/2).

Lara has been single ever since, except for a 2 month relationship with Chase Carver some years ago, which ended when he cheated on, and stole from, her. She did manage to forgive him to a certain extent as they were able to work together on numerous occasions (#3 - 7 and #9 - 14). Lara's real feelings for Chase were only shown when he died (#14) and in the aftermath of his death, admitting that she loved him (#15).

Lara's parents were indulgent and willing to give her lots of skiing, dance, and gymnastic lessons, and she was taught to shoot by Compton who, as the Croft's security adviser, thought it was a skill she should learn. All of these skills are now invaluable to her.
