I was at my comic store the other day and, deciding to take advantage of their current 20% off sale, picked up a copy of NECROMANCER #1.

Now I don't normally get Top Cow comics, owing to some disastrous purchases I made in the late 90's, but there was something about this comic that caught my eye. It could be because I'm a die-hard VERTIGO and fantasy fan, or because I'm a Chris Bachalo fan, but I decided eventually to swallow my reservations and pick it up.

I wasn't disappointed.

To Josh and Francis, what you guys have done is remarkable.

On the one hand, it may only be the first issue, but I already feel like I know enough about the characters to actually care. Not many first issues do enough to establish the setting and characters this way and NECROMANCER did this admirably. I can't wait for issue 2. Keep it up!

Secondly, the technical aspects of the story were flawless. By this I mean the pacing, the rhythm, the juxtapositions... flawless. Bravo.

Thrid, the art. Francis, as a half-Filipino myslef, I must say that you make me proud. I've always known that Filipinos have the talent to succeed in the world, and artists like you, Leinil Yu, and Whilce prove that. Your perspectives were good, your character designs were good, backgrounds were excellent... good job. And your Abby is a hot comicbook chick while still seeming more realistic than most.

To the rest of the crew... bravo as well.

And to Top Cow...

Because of this comic book, I am definitely going to try more Top Cow books. Freshmen, Witchblade, and Hunter-killer are all now on my "to try" list. So give these guys a raise, they've just won you a new reader (and his friends!)

Cicero: Thanks so much for the kind words...posts and e-mails like yours are really nice to see as a creator. Francis and I will be doing our best to keep up the quality on the book, and if you liked Issue #1, then I think you're going to *really* dig what we have in store for #2 and beyond!

Thanks also for posting and joining the message boards, and definitely keep us updated on what you think of the rest of the series...Francis cruises the boards too, so I'm guessing you'll be getting a reply from him soon as well!

Best,

-Joshua

P.S. And I'll pass on your suggestion for a raise to Top Cow editorial!

yeah i have to agree that necromancer #1 was pretty awesome. nearly flawless from start to finish, and the sequence with the blond jock's head bouncing off abby's dad's face was worth the cover price. i hope this one sticks around for a while, because there are implications in the first issue that could take a while to flesh out. i think at least 24 issues will be necessary to tell the story(a la crimson). kudos to ortega and manapul for an excellent and original tale.

Josh can correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, it will take more than 24 issues to tell the complete story.

Yeah, I'm going to script carefully due to the nature of a serial medium, however, if all goes as planned (knock on wood!), Abby van Alstine's complete story will take about 40-50 issues to tell...I'm really looking forward to seeing it through!
