I was at my comic store the other day and, deciding to take advantage of their current 20% off sale, picked up a copy of NECROMANCER #1.

Now I don't normally get Top Cow comics, owing to some disastrous purchases I made in the late 90's, but there was something about this comic that caught my eye. It could be because I'm a die-hard VERTIGO and fantasy fan, or because I'm a Chris Bachalo fan, but I decided eventually to swallow my reservations and pick it up.

I wasn't disappointed.

To Josh and Francis, what you guys have done is remarkable.

On the one hand, it may only be the first issue, but I already feel like I know enough about the characters to actually care. Not many first issues do enough to establish the setting and characters this way and NECROMANCER did this admirably. I can't wait for issue 2. Keep it up!

Secondly, the technical aspects of the story were flawless. By this I mean the pacing, the rhythm, the juxtapositions... flawless. Bravo.

Thrid, the art. Francis, as a half-Filipino myslef, I must say that you make me proud. I've always known that Filipinos have the talent to succeed in the world, and artists like you, Leinil Yu, and Whilce prove that. Your perspectives were good, your character designs were good, backgrounds were excellent... good job. And your Abby is a hot comicbook chick while still seeming more realistic than most.

To the rest of the crew... bravo as well.

And to Top Cow...

Because of this comic book, I am definitely going to try more Top Cow books. Freshmen, Witchblade, and Hunter-killer are all now on my "to try" list. So give these guys a raise, they've just won you a new reader (and his friends!)
