New York City Police Detective Sara Pezzini is the latest in a long line of bearers of the Witchblade, a mysterious artifact that takes the form of a deadly and powerful mystical gauntlet. Bound by destiny, the Witchblade chooses one woman in a generation, who must stand between the forces of Light and Dark and preserve The Balance. Now Sara must try to control the Witchblade and uncover its secrets, even as she investigates the city’s strangest, most supernatural crimes.
In our generation, a New York City Police Detective named Sara Pezzini, became the next in a timeless line of women to inherit the mantle of the Witchblade, a mysterious artifact that takes the form of a deadly and powerful gauntlet. Over the generations, the women who have shouldered the Witchblade’s heavy burden have become changed by it, their lives either uplifted or dogged by the dangers and supernatural menaces the power of the Witchblade attracts. For Sara Pezzini, she has had to learn control of the Witchblade and in time, she has grown to see the Witchblade as a means to do good in the world, at least more good than she could do without it. While it has proven to be an invaluable tool in her work as a detective investigating the strangest and most bizarre crimes in the city, one can’t help but wonder if Sara just has a bipolar sort of luck, or if the Witchblade is a harbinger for the supernatural and otherworldly.
What is the Witchblade itself? The Balance, a means of keeping chaos at bay and the universe in alignment with itself. It is the literal offspring of the most ancient of forces, forces which have been at war before time was time: The Darkness and The Angelus. Adding even further to its dichotomous nature, this fusion of polar opposites, the darkness and the light, male and female, means the Witchblade possesses both of these qualities and neither at the same time. While the Witchblade is a powerful weapon, capable of twisting its amorphous structure to form deadly weapons, it also has the capacity to protect its bearer with armor and even heal its bearer and, in rare instances, others as well.
While there is still a great deal that remains unknown about the Witchblade, a few things are certain. It has existed since the beginning of time and is a permanent in the world, an artifact that never ages, never grows dull with time. It is imbued with a male spirit, and is bore only by a woman, one from each generation. Beyond the basics of the who and what, the Witchblade is a weapon, a semisentient tool capable of great good or insurmountable evil. It is the responsibility of the women whose fates are forever scarred by its burden to decide how it will be used: a righteous gauntlet of light and hope, or a vengeful blade of darkness and wrath.
